Dr. John Oertle of Envita Medical Centers Warns of Breast Cancer Recurrence on AZ Family

Respiratory infections, such as the flu or COVID-19, can increase your risk of breast cancer recurrence, especially if you are within the one-year mark of remission. Referring to a recent study published in the scientific journal, “Nature,” Dr. John Oertle, Chief Medical Officer of Envita Medical Centers, said, “If there was breast cancer in the past and if you have come down with a respiratory infection, then it triggers molecules that could potentially activate these small metastases that may have been dormant.”
Speaking to AZ Family in their bulletin to mark “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” Dr. Oertle explained that the findings of this latest study corroborate the clinical observations of his team at Envita. “We see this on a clinical basis as well, where shortly following those infections, you see a return of cancer,” he added. To identify these early signs of cancer recurrence, Dr. Oertle’s team of specially trained physicians utilizes advanced tests, including Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) and cancer DNA analysis.
Dr. Oertle stated that even early-stage breast cancer patients, who may be in remission after undergoing lumpectomy and other prescribed treatment options, should consult their oncologist if they have been affected by these respiratory infections. He reiterated the importance of specialty testing, as identifying the early signs of recurrence can be crucial in preventing further metastatic spread.
