Envita specializes in diagnosing and treating a range of infectious, autoimmune, and chronic diseases...

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an idiopathic disorder affecting an estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million people in the United States and as many as 17-24 million people around the world [1]. CFS refers to persistent fatigue typically followed by numerous other symptoms which cannot be treated simply by rest. Symptoms include:

  • Loss of memory or concentration
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged lymph nodes, especially in your neck or armpits
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Extreme, exhaustion more than 24 hours after physical or mental exercise [2]

Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Research has shown that CFS is most common among people between 40 and 60 years old, but will also affect children, teenagers, and adults of all ages [3]. Modern medicine is unclear what exactly causes CFS, but it is suspected that specific conditions, both individually and in combination, could be the driving force behind the condition [4]. The CDC suggests that infection, immune system changes, stress, changes in energy production, and possible genetic links could be the cause or causes of CFS [4]. With nearly two decades of clinical experience, Envita Medical Centers is distinctly familiar with treating and identifying these conditions and their connection to CFS. Envita has experienced that many chronic diseases like CFS have additional possible risk factors including physical or emotional trauma, environmental factors like toxin or mold exposure, and foreign body factors like the prevalence of infections. Envita engages in extensive precision testing to fully examine the many potential causes of each patient's disease, providing a medical blueprint for personalized treatment options other clinics cannot offer.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome affects an estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million people in the United States and as many as 17024 million people around the world.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention defines CFS as severe fatigue lasting for at least 6 months, having no definable or organic disease, and accompanied by four or more of the symptoms listed above [4]. In addition, those with CFS can experience fluctuations in weight and appetite, chills, night sweats, diarrhea, mild fever and blurry vision. CFS can also be caused by other problems, such as anemia, endocrine dysfunction, low blood pressure, or immune or central nervous system dysfunction.

Those with CFS can be disregarded by doctors, they are often ignored and told they do not have a physical problem. Their symptoms can be discounted, and they can be overlooked for imagining their illness. At Envita Medical Centers, we provide our patients with a supportive and caring environment. We are determined to help our patients find the answers they seek, and we do not stop until we do. Our extensive experience and superior technology have helped thousands of patients find the origin of their CFS and make lasting progress against it.

Link Between CFS and Infections

While the exact causes of chronic fatigue syndrome have not been determined, studies suggest that infections are a potential trigger [4]. Roughly one in ten people infected with the Epstein-Barr virus, the Ross River virus, or the Coxiella burnetti bacteria will develop CFS symptoms [5]. In Envita’s 25 years of clinical experience we have also seen that CFS often follows several infectious illnesses, especially Lyme Disease and its many co-infections. Lyme disease has been found to be a multisystem inflammatory disease that affects the skin in its early, localized stage, and spreads to the joints, nervous system and other organ systems in its later, disseminated stages. Lyme patients live a life of chronic pain, with various debilitating conditions that affect the mind and body. Moreover, because Lyme disease can mimic the symptoms of more than some 350 other diseases, many patients have been misdiagnosed with chronic, autoimmune and other idiopathic conditions, leading to incomplete or misguided treatments by their previous medical care providers.

Research has shown that CFS is most common among people between 40 and 60 years old, but will also affect children, teenagers, and adults of all ages.

Fortunately, Envita Medical Centers engages in leading-edge diagnostics and extensive patient-specific testing to examine potential causes for that patient’s chronic condition. We then create a customized treatment plan based on our findings with the latest clinical data, providing potential relief from symptoms while simultaneously recovering the patient’s damaged or laboring immune system.

CFS and the Immune System

A recent study found that abnormal immune mechanisms are impactful on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, especially in the early stages of the illness [5]. This suggests that not only infections, but rapid and drastic changes to the immune system are also potential triggers for CFS. Further study has found that virally induced impairment of the immune system’s ability to remember antigens from pathogens and mount an immunological response, known as immune memory, may precipitate and perpetuate the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome [5].

Recognizing the importance of a healthy and robust immune system plays in fighting chronic infections and conditions, Envita Medical Centers utilizes precision-targeted integrative immunotherapy and immunotherapy-adjunctive agents, personalized for each individual patient. Our immunotherapies are designed to not only potentially reinvigorate a depressed or fatigued immune system.

Not every patient is a candidate for care or achieves these results. Treatments used in this case may not all be FDA approved for the treatment of this condition.

CFS and Cancer

Both infection and immune system abnormalities have been shown to be possible triggers for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome [4]. Interestingly, many cancers also arise from similar conditions, suggesting an association between CFS and some types of cancer [6]. In fact, a study conducted in 2012 found an elevated risk of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma following a CFS diagnosis [7]. Envita is a leader in next generation integrative cancer treatments. By incorporating cutting-edge technology, genetically targeted diagnostics, and two decades of clinical experience working with late stage and complex cancers, Envita is uniquely experienced in identifying and treating malignant growths. We use an approach that utilizes targeted biomarkers and molecular targets that are specific to each person’s genomics. Biomarkers and molecular targets contain information that can be gathered from a person’s cancer cells that are then used to tell what therapeutic agents may work best for that specific patient. Simultaneously, Envita deploys targeted immunotherapy and patient-specific immunotherapy adjunctive agents we find essential for re-establishing the body’s defense mechanisms to potentially fight chronic conditions like CFS that may precipitate certain cancers.
